Abstract

Employee retention has emerged as a critical human resource management concern as organisations seek to maintain skilled, experienced and committed employees in increasingly competitive labour markets. This review paper examines employee retention in organisations by focusing on the major factors influencing employees’ decisions to remain, the strategies adopted to improve retention, and relevant management perspectives. The review indicates that compensation and rewards, career development, training, leadership and managerial support, work environment, work–life balance, job satisfaction and employee engagement are important determinants of retention. The reviewed studies further highlight the importance of integrated human resource practices, organisational support, supervisor support, performance management, communication and career opportunities. Evidence also suggests that one-size-fits-all approaches may be less effective because employee expectations and organisational contexts differ. Therefore, organisations should adopt flexible, employee-centred and strategically aligned retention practices to strengthen commitment, reduce turnover intentions and support sustainable organisational performance.
