Abstract

Employee engagement has become a significant management concern because engaged employees can contribute to improved individual performance and broader organisational effectiveness. This review examines employee engagement and organisational performance from a management perspective, with particular emphasis on the major drivers and management practices that foster engagement. The review synthesises existing research on leadership and managerial support, job design and autonomy, organisational communication, recognition and rewards, learning and development, employee participation, and performance management. The reviewed studies indicate that supportive leadership, positive work environments, growth opportunities and effective human resource practices are important determinants of employee engagement. Evidence also indicates that higher engagement is associated with improved employee performance, productivity, innovation, customer service and organisational outcomes. Overall, the review highlights employee engagement as an important managerial mechanism for strengthening workforce effectiveness and organisational performance.
